HOUSE-MUSEUM CHAGAL

The Marc Chagall House Museum in Vitebsk is part of a museum complex dedicated to Marc Chagall, one of the greatest representatives of the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century.

The structure of the Museum of Marc Chagall in Vitebsk consists of two buildings: a memorial house-museum and an art center.

In the early 1900s, the artist’s parents, Hatzkel and Feiga-Ita Chagalli, owned four houses: one stone and three wooden. But despite this amount of real estate on the former Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, the family was considered poor. In the war, all the wooden buildings burned down, and the one-story house of red brick survived by some miracle. It is here that the museum exposition is located today.

Created a museum hard. In 1991, the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, after long requests, gave the go-ahead to create a museum. At that time, people still lived in the house on Pokrovskaya; nevertheless, a small museum exhibition opened in one of the rooms. In subsequent years, a complete restoration of the house was carried out and the necessary exhibits were collected. The house-museum of Marc Chagall opened its doors on July 6, 1997, the day of the 110th birthday of the artist. In the same year, a wooden house was restored next to a brick one.

The museum courtyard is very cozy, green and beautiful. In the Chagall garden grow apples, pears and plums. Flower beds are blooming.

In 1998, a monument to Chagall was opened in the courtyard of the museum. The bronze sculptural composition bears a poetic name – “Vitebsk melody on a French violin”. Its author is a talented sculptor Valery the Mighty.

The museum’s exposition includes items belonging to the Chagalls family, copies of archival documents, photographs and works of the artist, telling about the life of the creator and his family. The exposition includes the following halls: “Kitchen”, “Living Room”, “Grocery Shop”, “Boys Room”, “Red Room”. The interior of the house was recreated according to archival documents and the work of Marc Chagall himself. Supervised the work of Yuri Chernyak.

The house-museum of Marc Chagall in Vitebsk attracts both lovers of the art of Marc Chagall and tourists who have chosen to rest in Belarus.
