Mogilev Regional Art Museum named after Pavel Vasilyevich Maslenikov

The museum, whose image adorned the largest Belarusian bill. Outwardly, it is very similar to the castle. The century-old building who only did not occupy: in different years there were a bank, the editorial office of the newspaper Revolutionary Bet, a museum of proletarian culture, a historical museum, the regional committee of the CPSU (b), and then the CPSU, the editors of Mogilevskaya Pravda. Art canvases began to occupy the building in 1990. And since recent times – not only canvases. The works of the national artist of Belarus Pavel Vasilyevich Maslenikov, whose name is given to the museum, occupy four rooms on the second floor. In the first hall there are sketches of costumes and scenery for productions. Large canvases made in the technique of easel painting – landscapes of the Crimea, Baltic, Carpathians – adorn the second and third halls. The author presented the museum with 125 of his works.

Pavel Maslenikov’s last unfinished canvas is also kept in the Mogilev Art Museum. In the same hall, stylized as a workshop, there are personal things: a sketchbook, a chair, an easel, brushes and paints, a bayan – and rare works: sketches from travels. Part of the space of the second floor is reserved for watercolor and graphic works by Konstantin Gedda.

When you go up to the third floor, you will forget for a while that you came to the art museum. The exhibition “Preserved Heritage” has collected special exhibits. Passing past portraits of Belarusian enlighteners (Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Georgy Konissky, Pyotr Mstislavets, Spiridon Sobol) the attention of visitors is drawn to the huge fresco “PeratvarenneGaspodne”. This is a fragment of the wall painting of the Belynichsky monastery of the Carmelites (dated 1761). Next to a huge relic are fragments of an iconostasis of gold leaf, church clothing, Catholic sculptures.

Small artifacts found in Mogilev (crosses, candlesticks, the Gospel, pottery, icons, which served to decorate them and protect against fading) and valuable icons of the XVI-XVIII are collected in the next two halls. The first floor is represented by a hall of replaceable expositions and a room-safe with a hologram of the main Christian shrine of Belarus – the Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk.
