A tram in Vitebsk is not just a type of public transport. This is a kind of pride of the inhabitants and attraction of the city. Almost all lines run along wide green boulevards or on the side of the roadway, which ensures safety and good speed. After more than 110 years, the Vitebsk tram system is the most extensive and beautiful in Belarus.
The Vitebsk Tram History Museum began its work in 1966. The initiator of the creation of such an interesting institution became the head of the personnel department of the tram management LA Zabello. In 2002, the museum was awarded the title "National Museum". The museum consists of five sections. The first section displays the period from the beginning of the construction of the tram to the October Revolution - 1896-1918. He widely covers the emergence and development of urban electric transport in Russia, the start of construction and the launch of a tram in Vitebsk, the working conditions of Vitebsk trams in pre-revolutionary times, their participation in the revolutionary events of 1905, work during the First World War and October Revolution.
The second section of the museum covers the period from 1918 to 1941. It shows the working life of the tram team, the reconstruction of the entire tram farm, its development and work before the start of the Great Patriotic War.
The third section of the museum displays the period of the Second World War, when the tram facilities of Vitebsk were almost completely looted and destroyed by the German occupiers. Only a small part of the equipment was evacuated to Chelyabinsk.
The fourth section - the revival of the tram from the ruins and ashes after World War II and its post-war development, when on June 26, 1944, Vitebsk was liberated by Soviet troops. Gradually, the carcass carriages moved to the depot and underwent restoration, the roads were cleared or re-installed. Two years after the war, on October 5, 1947, the cars of the Vitebsk tram and the townspeople were heroic in their efforts.
The last section covers the history of the tram to the present day.
The exhibition presents models of trams, materials about the start of the first tram in Vitebsk in 1898, information about prices for travel of different periods, photos of the Vitebsk tram, accessories for drivers and conductors. On the territory of the depot there is an old tram car, put on a pedestal for the 110th anniversary of the tram traffic in Vitebsk.
